what are some unusual things to do in New York City?

I'll be in NYC with a thirteen year old child. We have been there before and done all the usual tourist things. What are some unusual things to do on and off Manhattan?

  1. Umm....Try some great sushi! Some places can be a bit pricey though...I would say take them shopping lol...who doesnt like shopping in NYC?
  2. Here's two unusual things for repeat visitors to do in New York. 1. Take a tour of the gold vault in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. http://www.newyorkfed.org/aboutthefed/ny_tours.html 2. Take a foodie tour in one of the boroughs with famous fat dave in his cab. www.famousfatdave.com/ If you want more, you can go to Astoria, Queens for some Greek food or olive oil shopping or check out the feta cheese.
  3. Take a train from the first stop to the last stop. If the train runs on an elevated (outdoor) track, it's nice to see the different parts of the city for the $2 train fare. :) I recommend the "F" line cause it takes you to Coney Island. :D
  4. Several suggestions. 1. While following the above food suggestion in Astoria Queens visit the Museum of the Moving Image, located in an historic and still functioning movie studio. 2. Visit Cony Island, walk down the boardwalk to the Aquarium, then walk through 'little Odessa' the Russian neighborhood. if you are here June 21don't miss The Mermaid Parade at 2:-00 PM. 3. Visit the Brooklyn Museum and the Adjacent Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Then walk through an historic 19th century brownstone neiborhood and finish your Brooklyn day with a fine dining meal on 5th Ave. Park Slope at less than Manhattan prices and pretention. 4. Visit The Cloisters, the medieval affiliate of the Metropolitan Museum - at the northern tip of Manhattan its made of actual buildings taken from Europe, well worth the trip. Home of the famous Unicorn Tapestries. Who dosn't love a unicorn.
